What are you working on?
In our lab we are
focused on understanding the process of programmed cell death (also
known as apoptosis). This process takes place throughout our entire
life and keeps us healthy. In our cells, the main regulators of
this mechanism are a family of proteins called Bcl-2 proteins. My
project aims to unravel the interplay between the members of this
family in order to control programmed cell death and to determine
the fate of the cell.
Why is it interesting?
Programmed cell death is an essential process for our development and health. A misregulation of this process can lead to several diseases, such as cancer or neurodegenerative disorders. The outcome of my research will provide us with a deeper knowledge of the regulation of programmed cell death. This would help us to understand why sometimes the wrong cells die or survive leading to severe consequences for our health.
What is your favourite thing outside of science?
My favourite thing outside of science is volleyball. During winter, indoor volleyball is my favourite hobby and in summer I can enjoy beach volleyball as well. Tuebingen has several great beach volleyball fields, the perfect places to go after work on sunny days.
Your favourite spot in Tuebingen is...?
Neckarbruecke (the bridge over the river Neckar). Especially in spring and summer when it is decorated with colorful flowers. It is the perfect spot to spend the afternoon next to the river.
