Do you have a completed and qualified vocational training outside of Germany? Then the residence permit § 18b AufenthG ("qualified employment") might be the right choice for you. 

Requirements

To qualify for the § 18b AufenthG ("qualified employment") residence permit, you must prove that

  • your qualification is recognised in Germany or is comparable to a German degree. 
  • you have a specific job offer from an employer in Germany. This offer must be for a qualified positon. Auxiliary tasks are not sufficient!

Your job does not have to be related to your professional qualifications. However, you will need a licence to practise if you want to work in a regulated profession. 

If you are above the age of 45

Should you be over the age of 45 and coming to work in Germany for the first time, the job you intend to take must enable you to earn a gross annual salary of at least €49.830,-- (as of 2024). You are also required to prove that you have adequate pension provision. 

What opportunities does the § 18b AufenthG ("qualified employment") residence permit offer?

The § 18b AufenthG ("qualified employment") residence permit might be the right choice for you if you are planning to take up a part-time position at the University of Tübingen or its related institutions. If you don't make the cut for the minimum salary of EU Blue Card holders, this residence permit might be the right alternative. Its advantages include:

  • Faster eligibility to obtain a settlement permit ("Niederlassungserlaubnis") if you have held a residence permit for the purpose of employment for at least three years. 
  • Tied employment to the University of Tübingen or its related institutions is withdrawn after two years of holding the § 18b AufenthG ("qualified employment") residence permit.
