The NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute is focuses in application-oriented research at the interface between the life sciences and material scienc. An interdisciplinary team of scientists is developing new technologies for companies and public research sponsors in the areas of pharma and biotechnology, biomedical technology, and surface and materials technology. It has unique interdisciplinary competence in providing R&D and services for regional and international companies.

The NMI supports the development of new drugs with methods from biochemistry, molecular and cell biology. In biomedical engineering, the focus is on future technologies such as regenerative medicine and micromedicine for new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. For clients in the field of surface and materials technology, the NMI focuses on the analysis, structure and functionalisation of materials and their surfaces.

The NMI is known for its incubator approach for start-ups in the area of biological and materials science.

It is supported by the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Tourismus des Landes Baden-Württemberg and is a member of the Innovation Alliance Baden-Wuerttemberg, an association of 12 non-university research institutes working closely with industry.
