United against infections - in this spirit the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) began its work in 2010 to fight against infectious diseases. At DZIF, over 250 researchers from 32 institutions throughout Germany develop new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. The focus of research is on tuberculosis, hepatitis, HIV and malaria as well as on gastrointestinal infections, infections of the immunocompromised host, healthcare-associated and antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, emerging infections and novel antiinfectives.

The aim of this nationwide collaboration between universities, hospitals and research institutions is to translate research results into clinical practice quickly and effectively. DZIF is thereby paving the way for the development of new vaccines, diagnostics and drugs against infectious diseases. Biobanks, biosafety laboratories, natural compound libraries, clinical trial centers, contacts to external partners - a shared infrastructure and a special focus on promoting next-generation talent support our goal to strategically align translational research. The DZIF is one of six German Centers for Health Research (DZG) established by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to combat the most common diseases.

Tübingen is one of seven partner sites of the DZIF and the coordinating body within DZIF for the topics "Malaria" and "Healthcare-associated and Antibiotic-resistant bacterial Infections"; another focus is on "Gastrointestinal Infections". Member institutions at Tübingen are the University of Tübingen, the University Hospital Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biology, all of which are also partners in the Tübingen Research Campus.
