Research for a future without diabetes. This is the mission of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) - one of six German Centers for Health Research that meet the challenges of widespread diseases. The DZD was founded in 2009 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The DZD brings together experts in the field of diabetes research and combines basic research, epidemiology and clinical applications. The aim of the DZD is to develop novel strategies for successful, personalized detection, prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications via an innovative, integrative research approach.

Members of the network are Helmholtz Zentrum Munich - German Research Center for Environmental Health, the German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf, the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke, the Paul Langerhans Institute Dresden of the Helmholtz Zentrum Munich at the University Medical Center Carl Gustav Carus Dresden and the Institute for Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases of the Helmholtz Zentrum Munich at the University of Tübingen together with associated partners at the Universities in Heidelberg, Cologne, Leipzig, Lübeck and Munich. In 2015 the members of the Competence Network Diabetes mellitus were integrated as additional project partners.
